Description of the Project
Owner: Dubai Municipality
Consultant: CRHI
Contractor: Khansaheb Civil Engineering

Following discussions with Dubai Municipality over many years Campbell Reith Hill were appointed by Khansaheb Civil Engineering Contracting Company to design two multi storey car parks in infill sites in Deira Central Business District. Khansaheb have partnered with National Car parks (NCP) of the UK to Design, Build, Finance and Operate two car parks in what is believed to be the first application of DBFO procurement in the United Arab Emirates.

CRHI responsibilities includes all architectural, structural, geotechnical engineering for both car parks. The Al Maktoom Hospital Road car park is on 4 levels, designed in precast and cast insitu reinforced concrete with traffic circulation system based on the innovative VCM system which uses the principle of warped slabs and ramps to achieve the necessary height separation.

The second car park which is currently in the design phase, is a 5 level underground car park which is to be constructed in small square off Al Sabkha Road. The design of the car park is again based on the VCM system but is complicated by the geotechnical and hydrological conditions on the site. The site is surrounded by existing twelve storey buildings some only a few metres away from the site boundary which is associated with the high water table in water bearing gravels, has the required specifications of an 800mm diaphragm wall with over 900 ground anchors to provide temporary support during construction. The design is further complicated by the massive uplift forces in the basement caused by the water pressures which are unbalanced by the weight of the car park structure. Deep tension piles are designed to resist these uplift forces and prevent movements. The layout incorporates a high standard of ventilation and lighting and the design is based on jet fans for ventilation and smoke control.
